A member asked:

Which method of mitral valve approach is better, through the sternum or between the ribs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It depends: The answer depends on many factors. Repair or replacement and whom is performing the surgery. In general, intercostal (between the ribs) has a faster recovery time. The results tend to be fairly similar with the sternotomy being slightly better. Talk to your surgeon for more details and specifics.
