A member asked:

Can you still have sex if you have a slight vaginal prolapse and will you still be able to if you have surgical correction?

Yes to both: Pelvic organ prolapse is a mechanical relaxation of those tissues. Having intercourse is fine but may become more uncomfortable if the prolapse worsens. The ability to have intercourse after prolapse surgery is one of the goals of any reputable surgeon doing that type of surgery. Most patients are able to continue having sexual relations after prolapse surgery.

Yes: Prolapse has been shown not to affect sexual function as much as one might think. After healing from surgical repair , usually 6 to 8 weeks, sexual activities may resume.

Yes: You can have sex with prolapse as long as it is not uncomfotable or painful for you. The surgical choice for prolapse repair should be tailored to your age, activity level and whether or not you are sexually active, to help ensure a good sex life after the repair.

Yes, you should be able to have sex after most surgeries to correct prolapse (after it has healed in 6-8 wks). However, there are prolapse surgeries that work by closing off the vagina and make future intercourse impossible. Talk to your surgeon before surgery.
