If given the choice of biopsy or lumpectomy, which one is best?

Biopsy, almost always: In general, it is best to go to the or for treatment rather than diagnosis. Furthermore, many breast abnormalities do not require surgical excision once we prove it is not cancerous. Lastly, knowing the diagnosis preop lets us plan definitive one-step surgery. Therefore, with rare exception, it is best to undergo nonsurgical needle biopsy over lumpectomy.

Biopsy: Needle bIopsy is 97-99% accurate. Since most biopsies turn out to be benign, needle biopsies avoid unnecessary surgeries and the attendant risks. Also, a proven diagnosis of cancer by needle biopsy allows a more definitive surgical procedure and treatment planning.
