Can doctors in a family medicine practice do surgery?

Minor only: Family pactice doctor usually do minor surgery such as repair laceraton. Minor office procedures only. Some does assist in surgery as an assistant with a surgeon.Since malpractic insurance is very high even as assitant, very few fp still do assistant in surgery anymore.

Cowboys: There once was a time before ...Residency programs would prepare fp's to do appys and lap chol and c sec for those wanting to practice m rural areas or even missionary type medicine. Are those still in existence? I remember when interviewing in 1995 we would call these the cowboy programs. It took a special breed of fp to embark on this journey.

Yes: Family physicians are trained in outpatient surgical procedures and many regularly perform lots of outpatient surgeries. Some family physicians also are trained in and perform cesarean sections. In more rural areas, family physicians used to perform appendectomies but this is very rare today. Minor surgeries are in the scope of practice for family physicians.
