Clinical examination: The doctor examines the vitreous and retina to look for bleeding to diagnose a vitreous hemorrhage. The doctor then has to determine the cause of the hemorrhage.

Observation: Vitreous hemorrhage, which is blood dispersed in the vitreous from a leaking, usually retinal vessel, is obvious to the patient as it causes a blockage of vision. The ophthalmologist will observe the blood in the vitreous on a dilated examination.. If the patient has underlying disease which could cause it such as diabetes, leukemia, or blood clotting abnormalities, that might be a clue.
