Don't stop exercise!: Make sure you are stretching the iliotibial band to take the pressure off the trochanteric bursa. Check to see if you have a leg length discrepancy. If so, a lift or orthotic can help. More padding on your bed surface will help. I recommend a memory foam mattress topper. They are quite affordable. If, however you are due for a new mattress, then don't put it off. Too soft or hard is bad.

Inflammation: A bursa is a fluid-filled sac usually between a bone and a tendon to allow smooth motion of the tendon. When it gets inflamed, it causes pain with activity and it is important to decrease that inflammation. A two-week course of nsaids, such as Ibuprofen taken consistently with activity modification should be the first treatment option. If no help, see a physician for a steroid injection.

Tough problem: If you have bursitis on the outside of your hip, and its not getting better with stretching, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications, you would likely benefit from a steroid injection to the area. This, along with continued stretching and oral antiinflammatories, takes care of the vast majority of the cases. Very rare for any of these to need surgery - i would recommend avoiding it if possible.
