Cause Vs promote: Its actually a common bacteria called streptococcus mutans that thrives in the sugar in feeds & creates acid which erodes the teeth. Feeds that pour over the tongue & get swallowed are not as bad as bf or bottle, that keep the feed on the teeth for extended periods. Find other ways to provide baby with nurture time & feed from a cup. Data doesn't reflect much bf superiority as a feed @2y.

Water at night: Putting a baby to bed after drinking milk without brushing teeth or putting a baby to bed with a bottle can cause cavities & decay. Commonly called bottle rot or nursing bottle caries. Water is the only bottle a baby should be given at bedtime.

How long?: The amount of time spent breast feeding should not cause tooth decay unless you are not brushing your child's teeth. Baby bottle teeth are usually caused by leaving a bottle iin over night.

Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding has not caused his teeth to decay. Rather not brushing his teeth regularly has caused it. Be sure to brush his teeth often--especially at night after eating and you can continue to breastfeed as long as necessary.

One option is to go: away for the weekend & have Dad or Nana stay with him. Limit whole milk & milk products to 16-21 oz./day. Offer in an open-mouth cup at mealtimes only. Walking around sipping milk, juice or other sugary liquids from a Sippy cup will also cause cavities. Juice isn't needed. Offer water for thirst. Brush his teeth after meals & before sleep. See healthy children.org for tips on diet & sleep.

Hammer : If your child was hitting himself with a hammer, you'd takeaway the hammer. You have to be a parent first, a friend second. Dr. Friedman's correct, take the source of the damage away. Then get the damage fixed ASAP by a specialist Pedodontist or your Dentist. Practitioner will also review diet choices and appropriate oral hygiene. Don't wait. Rampant caries can be quite dangerous.
