Infection: I agree with dr. Dowd and others that you should see your doctor. It sounds like you have an infection called paronychia - see http://www.Aafp.Org/afp/2001/0315/p1113.Html.

Paronychia: Hot salt water soaks for 10 minutes three time a day for a few days usually does the trick. If it doesn't, you should see a hand surgeon for an evaluation. May need to be drained. Antibiotics rarely needed. Chronic infections may be due to yeast, in which case topical medicine might be prescribed.
