Assymetrical chest: The child most likely has an assymetrical chest. Although not very common, we still see them in our practice. If the child is totally asymptomatic and has had this assymetry more or less since he was born and additionally has no evidence of heart or lung disease, i probably assure the mom that her son is ok, and there is no need for additional tests.

Chest asymmetry: An elevated left side of the chest can be an abnormality that will not cause any concern. It could also rep. Abnormal blood flow patterns beneath. A large ASD (hole in the top part of the heart) can increase the blood flow to the lungs significantly enough to cause enlargement of the right heart structures and pulmonary artery. Physical exam will help to decide if other tests are necessary.
