What does a head ct scan rule out, if you fell and hit your head?

Hematoma: The main "rule out" would be a hematoma (blood clot) between your brain and skull, which could expand and cause neurological problems. There is little extra space in our skulls, so it's important not to have anything more in there than brains. Our brains are quite soft, and can be injured or bruised when we fall and hit our heads. There could also be active bleeding, which a ct scan could show.

Fracture or bleed: A non contrast head ct is indicated if there has been significant trauma to the head to rule out bleeding around or within the brain. It will also identify fractures of the skull that would be missed on a regular x-ray.
