SEE A PAIN DOC: A disc is bulging because it loses elasticity - like a waistband in your underwear. When it loses elasticity it no longer stays nice and tight and snug like it used to be. If it bulges enough it can get close to the nerve and irritate it. The inflammation and irritation can cause pain in the neck or shoulder blade as well as pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in your arm.
