Immediately with us: We allow sippy cup use immediately after cleft palate repair (the same day).

Ask his surgeon: Many speech/language therapists and developmental/behavioral pediatricians ( including me) advise against sippy cup use for children with speech/language delays because they keep the tongue forward and promote sucking. A " commuter cup" with a small ledge or a soft plastic cup with a space cut out for baby's nose promotes drinking with lip closure, important for bilabial sounds like " b" and "p.".
