Kidney disease: If a woman with lupus has kidney disease (lupus nephritis), it presents a major problem during pregnancy. Both the mother and the fetus are at risk. Studies are being done to control nephritis before and during pregnancy. It is difficult to introduce new drugs to pregnant patients as the risks to the baby are unknown.
