Fungal infection: Fungal infections often develop in dark moist areas of the body such as the groin area and under the arms and breasts. He can try an over the counter anti-fungal treatment for a few days but if the rash doesn't improve, he needs to see a doctor.

Depends on type: Candida/yeast is creamy white, tends to occur in skin folds, groin, under breasts. Tinea versicolor doesn't tan, has irregular borders, slightly scaly edges. Tinea corporis/ringworm starts as red spot that grows outward in ring shape; edge is raised, scaly; center appears normal. Vitiligo (not a fungus) is patches of hypopigmentation. Skin scraping & test for fungus by doc can be a start.
