It is an autoimmune: Type i diabetes begins as a body's attack pancreas specifically the islet cells. Eventually this leads to an impairment in the production of insulin, and a dysregulation of glucose homeostasis. It almost always needs to be treated with Insulin and a skilled physician (usually an endocrinologist).
