Depends: Having diabetes does not necessarily shorten a person's lifespan. Control of blood sugar and preventing complications of diabetes including heart disease, strokes and kidney damage can allow many to have long, healthy lives.

Depends on control: Complications of dm2 which can lead to premature death are mostly related to uncontrolled high blood sugar. Someone with diabetes who takes good care of their health & works closely with their dr to make sure blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, weight & other issues are controlled with lifestyle & meds, can have a normal lifespan. If uncontrolled for years, disability & early death common.
