Like cancer...Yes!: Acid reflux, when chronic, can lead to permanent changes in the esophagus with scarring (strictures), & precancerous tissue (barrett's) that progresses to esophageal malignancy. Chronic exposure of vocal cords to refluxed material can promote asthma, & even laryngeal cancer. Other concerns include eroded teeth, chronic sinusitis, not to mention profoundly altered quality of life for sufferers.
