A member asked:

If breathing is automatic, then what's the problem with preemies?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Premature infants: Unfortunately in premature infants the brain center which controls the delicate balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide is not fully developed. Also the lung surfactant has not developed so the lung collapses between breaths and babies become hypoxic! all efforts are being made today in the world to prevent prematurity especially due to the fact that lungs are not developed !
