Getting high: The person is focusing his/her entire life on getting high, or procuring the substances to do so. Physiologically, the brain's reward center may not be working adequately, and the person may be trying to medicate this without realizing it. Behaviors of addicted people often include lying to family and others about their substance use -- and this is very damaging to relationships.
