See below: Patients with uncontrolled diabetes may develop excessive thirst, excessive urination and weight loss. A fasting blood sugar is obtained and is above the upper normal of 126. In addition a glycohemoglobin test gives a good estimate of the average blood sugar level for the preceding 90 days. This is elevated in patients with diabetes.
