Compartment syndrome: It sounds like you may be describing an acute episode of exercise-induced exertional compartment syndrome (eiecs) rather than shin splints. Did the tightness and pain rapidly resolve once excessive exertion ceased? A lack of actual bone pain and moreso pain over the bulging, tight muscle belly of the anterior and lateral (front/side) of your leg is also more indicative of eiecs.
