What is pdd?

PMS: This is an industry term for what most people call PMS or premenstrual syndrome - PDD (or pmdd) stands for premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which in all honesty is industry's way of creating a diagnosis for what most women feel prior to their menstrual cycle, and thus justify the selling of a drug to treat this condition. Sarafem, which is rebranded Prozac (fluoxetine) is marketed for this condition.

Terms are changing: For several decades, pdd (pervasive developmental disorder) was the broad term that included autism, asperger's disorder, and several other rare but similar disorders. Gradually, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has gained favor, and the new diagnostic manual will do away with pdd in favor of ASD as the broad term, with autism and asperger's disorder going away as distinct diagnoses.
