If a person is usually kind and caring only to have episodes of rage, unprovoked, with a complete personality change, unable to be reasoned with, excessively strong during the episode, excessively cruel and menacing, and then after appears to not have full memory for what happened then a seizure like condition of the amygdala may be responsible. A A positive family history of severe mood disorders often exists in this situation. The rage attacks are not carried out with intent or with a full awareness and are followed by a post ictal state of unusual kindness, remorse without memory and a return to the baseline personality. This can be treated with a seizure medication, Tegretol or Depakote.
