A doctor has provided 1 answer

Virus in the body: Once a person is infected with Herpes (1 or 2) the virus lives in the nerves of the person forever, what your doc said notwithstanding. The virus may reactivate from time to time. In case of HSV 1 this causes "cold sores", for herpes 2 it may cause repeated outbreaks of genital herpes. You may not have any lesions but can still pass the virus to your contacts. Consult an infectious disease doc.
