Unclear: Exact numbers depend upon which study is used. However, a meta-analysis of studies done in 2013 did show a strong relationship between hiatal hernia and Barrett's esophagus, with the association being most strong in patients who had longer segments of Barrett's esophagus. This is likely due to more exposure of the esophagus to gastric contents in the presence of a hiatal hernia.
