Variable: Barrett's esophagus develops in a small number of patients who have had chronic reflux for a number of years( probably at least 5 years or more). Risk for developing Barrett's increases with: tobacco smoking, obesity, hiatal hernia, symptoms during sleep and onset of GERD before age 30. Consider endoscopy if (+) risk factors or if age over 50.
