We don't know.: We don't know. We believe that it takes a long time since it is a disease of middle age men>women about 3:1. The gerd has to have been active over time. Gerd is a major risk factor for barrett's, but the incidence on adenocarinoma from barrett's is declining, perhaps related to improved drug therapy for gerd.

Not all GERD : Becomes barrett's esophagus. Barrett's is a special kind of transformation of the cells in the esophagus called "metaplasia". The normal cells are replaced with a different type. We treat with acid reduction things like ppi (prilosec) or zantac, (ranitidine) behaviour modification (head of bead up, avoid food that makes worse) rarely surgery. Smoking makes the risk for barrett's higher. Be well.
