Broken rib?: Sometimes VERY hard coughing can actually break a rib. That's my suspicion in your case. The diagnosis is confirmed with an x-ray. There is a procedure which can numb the nerve going to the rib, to give pain relief until it heals. But it takes several weeks to heal.
