Yes: Some murmurs can sound like bruits and the noise radiates up to the neck, especially those involving the aortic valve. Any new murmur or bruit should be evaluated further by an ultrasound of the heart and also sometimes the carotids can be checked by Ultrasound too. How serious the murmur is depends on the symptoms you are having, of course. There are many murmurs that are loud but no problem.

Bruit: Sounds are in the ear of the behearer. Carotid bruit is generally different from other systolic murmurs but it could sound similar to some folks.

Aortic stenosis: murmurs can be referred to the neck and sound somewhat like carotid bruits. A carotid duplex or echocardiogram can tell the difference

Yes: Heart murmurs that involve the aortic valve can often be confused with a carotid bruit. About half of all people who have a bruit in the neck have carotid disease.it is more common in people over 65, smokers, and those with coronary disease or PAD. The best test for carotid stenosis is a duplex scan

Yes: There are heart murmurs that can sound similar to carotid bruits. Particularly, the murmur of aortic stenosis (a tight aortic valve) can mimic the sound of a carotid bruit because the sound of the murmur radiates up into the neck area. A physician can perform maneuvers that distinguish between sounds emanating from the heart and those from a diseased carotid artery.
