Gas backs up: When you are constipated, the gas backs up and is trapped around the stool. When you go to the bathroom, the gas is then released. Also, having the stool sitting in the colon for a long time causes fermentation - the bacteria and broken down vegetables in the stool produce carbon dioxide, which increases your gassiness.
