Croup: Swelling if trachea from a viral infection is called croup. The cough and noisy breathing are usually worse at night. The swelling can become obstructive particularly in small infants. The key is to pay attention to air movement, not the cough or noise. Less air means a trip to the ER. Prednisone is the drug of choice. Cold air and a humidifier also shrink the swelling. Lasts 3-5 days.
