Can be close: Both the nodes and the hernia can be in the canal. They're distinguished by physical findings, not so much location. You're less likely to find the nodes if the hernia is in the scrotum.

Common condition: inguinal nodes can enlarge due to so many benign conditions from ingrown toe nails , simple scratches infections on gentiles etc of course due to malignancy also can enlarge , but other location like neck and axilla more often needs serious investigation to find the cause of it.
