Costochondritis: Sharp pains in the chest are frequently caused by an inflammatory condition called costochondritis - an inflammation in a rib joint between cartilage ("gristle") and bone. This not serious, but can range in pain intensity from annoying to disabling. It can be ignored if mild. You can also take NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen for some pain relief.
