Secondarily: Infantile spasms divide broadly into those arising in the context of an identified disorder and those that are not (idiopathic). The spasns themselves are not hereditary, but many of the identified causes can be. See: http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/west_syndrome.

Among the causes of: WS are genetic disorders. The most common is Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, with Autosomal Dominant inheritance; each child of an affected individual has a 50% chance of having TSC. Symptoms & severity of TSC vary widely. WS can also be caused by a mutation in the ARX gene or the CDKL5 gene on the X chromosome of an unaffected carrier mother. A Chromosomal Microarray is done to detect genetic causes.
