Edwards syndrome: Edwards syndrome is better known as trisomy 18. It is caused by imperfect division of the chromosomes with an extra chromosome ending up in the embryo. That process can happen to anyone.

Define "inherited": A person's concept of inheritance can vary.If you mean, does this pass along like eye color or PKU, the answer is no.If you mean does it come from your parents, the technical answer is yes. Either the egg or sperm that join for conception carry 2 instead of 1 #18 chromosomes resulting in a fetus that has 3 #18 in each cell instead of a pair. The extra #18 causes the changes of Edward syndrome.

A 20-year-old female asked:

Is edwards syndrome dominant or recessive , can it be inherited?

Neither : Edward syndrome is an abnormality of chromosome numbers, not a trait or mutation in the gene code. It cannot be inherited as all cases are fatal before reproductive age. During conception only one of chromosome of each pair is given by both parents to the fertile egg.If a parent adds their 2 nbr 18th chm to the other parents nbr 18, 3 end up in the egg & the excess 18 causes the all the problems.

What is edwards syndrome?

Early Chromosome DX: Dr edwards reported of the features of trisomy 18 in 1960 in the british journal the lancet. Drs patau & smith reported it in the same journal edition but the name edward syndrome has stuck. This was soon after the methods for preparing & counting chromosomes was available in research labs starting in the late 1950's.
