Edwards syndrome: Edwards syndrome is better known as trisomy 18. It is caused by imperfect division of the chromosomes with an extra chromosome ending up in the embryo. That process can happen to anyone.

Define "inherited": A person's concept of inheritance can vary.If you mean, does this pass along like eye color or PKU, the answer is no.If you mean does it come from your parents, the technical answer is yes. Either the egg or sperm that join for conception carry 2 instead of 1 #18 chromosomes resulting in a fetus that has 3 #18 in each cell instead of a pair. The extra #18 causes the changes of Edward syndrome.
