A member asked:

When you get blood tests at your first prenatal visit, can they determine if you have depression?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: There are no blood tests to detect major depression or other mood disorders. The only way to diagnose depression is for a trained practitioner to gather a careful history of symptoms, perform a mental status exam (and ideally a physical exam as well), and screen for medical conditions that can affect mood or behavior.
