A member asked:

When it comes to medical specialties, are spine surgery and spinal cord injury medicine the same thing?

No they are not: The surgeon operates to stabilize and decompress the injured anatomy of the spine. The specialty of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine refers to physicians who have studied, and treat the primary and secondary complications of the spinal cord injury. Including, but not limited to rehabilitation, mobility, urological endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, dysfunction.

No: No. Because there are some physicians that treat spinal cord injuries that are not surgeons, physiatrists are an example; and there are some spinal surgeons that do not treat spinal cord injuries.
