A member asked:

I have a friend who was just diagnosed with hashimoto's disease. what is the difference between regular hypothyroidism and hashimoto's? is tx the same

Same thing: Hi. Hashimoto's is overwhelmingly the most common cause of hypothyroidism, followed by surgical thyroidectomy in prevalence. Hashimoto's hypothyroidism is most commonly treated with l-thyroxine, although some people prefer desiccated pig thyroid extract, and other times T3 (liothyronine) is added to l-thyroxine (although certainly not required). Good luck to your friend!
