Nothing serious: If you have a relatively small numb area on hip it's likely due to nerve compression of one of the small sensory nerves to that area of skin. The most likely cause would be pressure from something in your pocket, on your belt or a bag that rests on the skin in that area. Another possibility is compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve by a tight belt. See your Dr if it persists.

Meralgia paresthetic: You may have a condition called meralgia paresthetica which is an abnormal sensation caused by a trapped nerve. Factors include weight gain, tight-fitting clothing, or a recent injury to the hip. You would need to see a clinician to sort it out, since imaging and other testing may be required to make a diagnosis and recommend treatment. Hope that helps.
