Trust ur primary doc: Hematologist are doctors that specialize in diagnosing & treating blood diseases (like anemia & others). Oncologist specialize in diagnosis & treatment of cancer, including blood-borne cancers (leukemia, lymphoma). Oftentimes referrals are prompted by abnormal blood tests but it is best if there r symptoms; trust ur primary doc to refer u if it demands (unusual wt loss/fatigue, no resp to treatmen

Blood/cancer: Hi. A heme/onc doc should be seen for a variety of blood diseases and for for most cancers (solid or liquid).

Depends: on what the problem is. Hematology deals with diseases of the blood, so if there is too much or too little of the blood components (red cells/white cells/platelets) then a hematologist may be consulted. Oncology deals with cancer, so if someone has cancer part of the cancer "team" consists of an oncologist. It's best to consult the heme/onc specialist early on in the disease.
