Can hematologists perform surgery?

In general, no.: To oversimplify slightly, there are two types of specialties in the medical field - surgical and medical, though there are some that involve both. Hematologists primarily use medication to treat patients, and when surgery is needed, refer patients to a surgeon. One exception to this would be the performance of a bone marrow biopsy.

Some times: Typically hematologist do procedures such as liver biopsies, however, if a surgery such as a colectomy is needed then they will refer you to a surgeon. Each doctor chooses how extensive they feel comfortable doing procedures. Discuss all of your treatment options with your doctor. Good luck

No: Hi. Hematologists are trained in internal medicine and then sub-specialize in hematology and oncology. They do minor procedures like bone marrow biopsies and any internal medicine procedures, but surgeries are performed by surgeons, physicians who specifically train in surgery.
