Based on BMI: Whether or not to perform perform a bariatric procedure is based on your BMI and your comorbidities, not % body fat. Lap bands are beginning to fall out of favor due to complications associated with them and a failure for long-term weight loss. Typically insurance will not cover bariatric procedures unless your BMI is over 40 or over 35 with comorbidities. Your BMI is 33.4
