Ice and rest: Try to rest & apply ice 2 to 3x/ day for about 15 minutes. I know it's cold, but helpful. Use a towel/cloth as barrier to protect the skin. If you don't have a contraindications to anti-inflammatories (allergy, stomach ulcer, gastritis, kidney problems), you can try Aleve (naproxen) for the pain. Read the label, take with food/ milk and stop if pain in stomach develops. If not improving see a doctor.

Muscle pull: This is most likely a muscle pull. Other diagnoses also need clarification. When you see your physician, this can be evaluated but initially supportive care, ice the back for 36 hours off and on and then can use heat.
