Could be trouble.CMD: Black, tarry looking stool can be a sign of bleeding in the gut (>3-4 ounces of blood-a lot), also seen w/iron pills,pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). Yellow stools can be seen with a variety of issues, including pancreatic problems. Clay colored stools can be seen with blockage of bile ducts, less with certain antacids, barium from Xray tests. SEE MD ASAP to make sure you don't have a SERIOUS problem.

Color of: Stool usually a function of diet. If on iron pills stool may appear dark or tarry. If blood is present in stool evaluation is necessary to determine source. Small amount of mucus in stool is normal. Excess may be related to GI infections or IBD
