Many: there are more false positives than true positives and that is why CA-125 should NOT be used as a screening test.
other causes-- any infection or inflammation , any benign tumor, endometriosis, other malignancies.

A 21-year-old member asked:
Does an elevated ca 125 level always indicate that ovarian cancer is present?

NO: As a screening marker for ovarian cancer this test is of no use. It can be elevated in women with conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and uterine fibroids to name a few. Its true utility is in monitoring for cancer recurrence.

Ovarian cancer ?'s: Elevation in Ca 125 can be caused by ovarian cancer outside the ovary ( i.e., intraperitoneal metastasis). There are other causes of elevated Ca 125, but see your physician or a gyn oncologist to be certain as soon as possible.
