Surgical IV access: A "cutdown" is surgical slang for the technique of direct placement of a catheter into a vein or artery by making an incision and dissecting down to the vessel. Common in the past, especially in emergency settings, ultrasounds have made our jobs much better when it comes to finding these vessels--this is done only very rarely at present.
