Neither is the cause: Neither IBS or hemorrhoids is likely to cause black spots in your stool. IBS doesn't cause dark stools and hemorrhoids usually cause small amounts of bright or dark red blood. Your stool needs to be checked for blood. If there is blood, the cause needs to be found.. If it isn't, it could be an undigested dietary substance like poppy seeds. or supplemental iron..

Black "spots" ...: may mean bleeding from higher up in the GI tract such as the stomach. Or it may not be blood at all. You might start by trying to do a stool test for occult blood, either at home or with your doctor. Typically hemorrhoidal bleeding would be (bright) red, and usually no bleeding with IBS. Could gum lesion have been bleeding??
