Not Immediately: The onset of action and relief is not immediate. Onset of action could be 8-12 hours and a severely inflamed throat could take 24 - 48 hours for significant relief of pain in mono.

Should not be used: According to UpToDate,Corticosteroids have NOT been shown to be helpful for routine cases of EBV infectious mono,and two studies have reported severe complications resulting from using corticosteroids in routine cases of mono. Paradoxically,corticosteroids are indicated for severe airway obstruction from mono,and appear to be helpful for overwhelming mono leading to liver failure or severe anemia
