Muscular etiology: I wonder if you're overdoing an activity recently which has caused some inflammation in the thenar muscle at the base of your thumb. I also wonder if you might be getting some early carpal tunnel symptoms. Try some decreased activity and NSAIDs. If symptoms persist, I'd see your ortho md.
