IF low suspicion: If the degree of suspicion for a deep vein thrombosis (DVT, clot) is low, then a normal D-dimer suggests that there is no DVT. (DVT = blood clot in a deep vein, which can be at risk for breaking off and going to the lung causing pulmonary embolism.)

Congratulations: You do not have a blood clot! The D-dimer test is a fairly accurate (95%) way to screen for blood clots, so if it is only 178 I would be pretty relieved. If it was 249 I might still be cautious! Sometimes if the blood is high in lipids it can throw off the accuracy of the test a little, but 178 is way below the level we would need to worry about!
